Go to any bookstore these days and you find all the writing advice you could use in a lifetime. OK, sure, a lot of it is coming from me. I used to believe that, when it came to writing tips, there was no such thing as bad advice. Any advice could help open a narrow window into the process of writing.
I no longer believe that. I now believe that bad writing advice is like bad medicine or bad pizza or bad sex counseling or bad music. If it’s bad, it’s bad — and it could hurt you and your writing.
In this week’s writing chat, I talked about how to detect bad writing advice and how to figure out what advice is best for you and your needs as a writer. We also heard from chat participants, who shared the worst writing advice they’ve received. You can replay the chat here …
