In late March, the Post moved Michel du Cille from director of photography to associate editor of photography, a position that allowed him to go back to shooting. Sonya Doctorian had been acting DOP in the meantime.
Word of Golon’s hiring apparently leaked out early, spurring Visuals editor David Griffin from Canvas Collage to send this email to photo staff:
Dear Photo Staff,
I had planned to make this announcement to you all personally later today, but the news has leaked and I do not want you all to hear it second hand. MaryAnne Golon is joining us as the new Director of Photography. Below is the formal announcement. I still plan to meet with you all today to discuss and answer questions.

We are very pleased to announce that MaryAnne Golon will be joining us as our new Director of Photography.
MaryAnne is a powerhouse in the industry, renowned for her many years of astounding work as both Deputy and Director of Photography at Time magazine. She worked closely with such greats as James Nachtwey, Yuri Kozyrev, Christopher Morris, Callie Shell, Platon and Alex Webb among many others. She was the lead photo editor for Time’s breaking news issues on the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, both of which won coveted awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors. Prior to that, she was director of photography of U.S. News & World Report.
Since leaving Time, MaryAnne has been editing book projects and collaborating with the Amsterdam-based Noor agency (www.noorimages.com), curating for LOOK 3, Festival of the Photograph (www.look3.org) and FotoWeekDC, She has been teaching at numerous photographic workshops and seminars around the world, while also working four days a week at AARP, here in Washington, leading their web photography operations and adding a diverse digital sensibility to her skill set.
MaryAnne looks forward to making D.C. her new home and is very familiar with our fair city having lived here when she worked at U.S. News. She has a son, Christian, who is a freshman at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ.
She will begin in early May.
