ProPublica developer says too few journos have skills to deal with data
“I went into journalism because I wanted to be a longform writer in the tradition of the New Yorker. But I’m fortunate that I stumbled onto the path of using programming to do journalism; more and more, I’m seeing how important stories aren’t being done even though the data and information are out in broad daylight (as they were in [Dollars for Docs] and SOPA Opera) because we have relatively few journalists with the skills or mindset to process and understand that data.”
