Scripps Howard Foundation
Editorial writer Jamie Lucke of the Lexington Herald-Leader, Sara Ganim of The Patriot-News, and Danny Hakim and Russell Buettner of The New York Times are among the winners of this year’s Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards, which were announced this morning. California Watch, a project of the Center for Investigative Reporting, won the Public Service Award for its “On Shaky Ground” project, an investigation into California schools’ preparedness for earthquakes.
Ganim won for her investigation into former Penn State football staffer Jerry Sandusky, for which she’s already won a Polk Award. Lucke won for a series of editorials about the coal industry in Appalachia. And Hakim and Buettner won for their series “Abused and Used,” about the care of the developmentally disabled in New York.
