Time was named the “Magazine of the Year” at Thursday’s National Magazine Awards. Bloomberg Businessweek won the “General Excellence, Print” award, The New York Times magazine won for “Feature Photography” and IEEE Spectrum won the “Thought Leader Magazine” award. Time’s Osama bin Laden death cover, its Steve Jobs death coverage and its naming of “The Protester” as person of the year were in its submission package, Steve Cohn writes.

The National Magazine Awards were criticized this year for doing a lousy job of honoring women in the industry; no women were finalists in the reporting, feature writing, profile writing, essays and criticism or columns and commentary categories. Sid Holt, the chief executive of the American Society of Magazine Editors, which presents the awards, called the criticism “kind of silly“: “You can argue with [judges] decisions, but you can’t argue with the process,” he said.
