People upset by the possibility of Charles and David Koch buying Tribune’s newspapers held a rally in Beverly Hills, Calif., Thursday, marching to Tribune Chairman Bruce Karsh’s home. “About 100” people protested, Meg James reports.
“Every great city deserves a great newspaper. Here in Los Angeles, we need the L.A. Times to capture the local diversity of our voices, issues and our stories,” said Kathay Feng, executive director of Common Cause. “Honest, credible journalism is one of the most important keys to our democracy.”
The publishing company’s newspaper holdings include the L.A. Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Baltimore Sun.
Meanwhile in Baltimore, protesters handed in a petition on Tuesday with more than 6,500 signatures to the Baltimore Sun (another Tribune Co. holding) against the potential acquisition. A similar petition — with more than 250,000 signatures — was delivered to the Times’ headquarters in April.
The Tribune Company’s CEO said last week “such speculation has been and is premature.”
Meanwhile, an intrepid group of Indiegogo activists have set out to compete with the brothers to buy the Tribune Co. They’ve raised more than $100,000 so far, slightly shy of the $660 million they’ll need to outbid the Kochs.
