The (Westchester County, N.Y.) Journal-News isn’t the only Gannett paper fronting an investigation into gun ownership among members of Congress by the company’s Washington, D.C., bureau and USA Today. But it’s probably the Gannett paper with the most celebrated history of tracking gun ownership.

Last week The New York Times mapped the origins of guns seized by Chicago police between 2001 and early 2012 to illustrate a piece about how Chicago’s tough gun laws haven’t quelled gun violence there. And The Journal News has continued to report on local gun ownership, though to less fanfare than earlier this year when it published maps of pistol permit holders that outraged the community and led to a law restricting public access to gun information.
