TV Guide Magazine

Robert Silver created six mosaics from old TV Guide covers for TV Guide Magazine’s 60th anniversary issue, due Thursday. Each cover represents a different decade of TV history.

In an email to Poynter, a TV Guide rep says each cover mosaic will feature one flipped cover “as both a challenge to eagle-eyed readers and as a nod to [illustrator Al] Hirschfeld, who frequently hid his daughter’s name in his work.” (More covers after the jump)

Desi Arnaz Jr. was TV Guide’s first cover star, on April 3, 1953. Michael Logan writes about how that cover happened:

How did we, the new kid in town, score the coup? The elder Desi took a meeting with a TV Guide Magazine rep, during which he had the photos stacked on his desk. At one point, wrote Whitney, Desi “excused himself to go to the men’s room, making it clear that if several pictures were missing when he got back, he would not notice.”
