On Friday, journalists at the Los Angeles Times got to be part of a moment.

Laura Nelson, a transportation reporter at the Times, told Poynter in an e-mail that no one at the Times knows the couple. “They’re just two people who really love their local paper.”
Darrell (Kunitomi, communications) had been telling everyone for several weeks that there was going to be a proposal by the city desk at 11:45 a.m. on Friday. The tour group was a few minutes late, so by the time they arrived, there were probably 25 or 30 reporters and editors milling around by the city desk, waiting for it to happen. Someone randomly shouted, “Do you have the photos?” so it looked like we were busy. We were joking that the tour group must think that journalists just hang around all the time, shooting the breeze.
I didn’t hear much of the proposal, unfortunately, but he got down on one knee and she said yes!
In an e-mail to Poynter, Kunitomi said he was contacted about a month ago about the proposal. “He said he wanted to propose at The Times,” Kunitomi wrote. “I was struck by his originality.”
The man told Kunitomi that his girlfriend is a writer and editor, and that the newsroom wouldn’t just be suitable, but unique, “and I agreed.”
On Valentine’s Day, Poynter wrote about a proposal via the Toronto Star’s front page.
