Marc Lavallee is the The New York Times’ new head of interactive news technology, according to a memo sent to staffers. He was previously deputy editor of interactive news. This is the one of roles Aron Pilhofer held at the Times before he left for the Guardian, a move announced last month. (Pilhofer was named AME for digital strategy last July but retained the news technology title.)

Lavallee spoke with Poynter last year about the Times’ experiment with tweetable highlights in a story. Times writer Dave Itzkoff, who wrote the story, called the interactive crew “wizards — literal, spell-casting, wand-waving wizards.”

Lavallee will report to Chief Technology Officer Rajiv Pant and Assistant Managing Editor for Digital Operations Ian Fisher, the memo says.
