Applying the Konami code uncovers a hidden explainer on Vox.com.

Poynter NewsU interactive learning producer Ren LaForme found that the code worked on the site Monday (“I’ve never been more disappointed in a group of co-workers,” LaForme said when no one in his seating area immediately knew what he was talking about.)

The code itself leads you away from Vox’s homepage to, fittingly, an explainer on Easter Eggs.

Try for yourself. The code is: Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a.

Here’s how Vox explains the Konami code.

The Konami code is a sequence of keystrokes that allows players to enable special features in video games made by the Japanese company Konami. It became widely known among American gamers thanks to Contra, a video game that was released for the Nintendo Entertainment system in 1988. Entering the Konami code during the opening sequence of Contra allowed a player to play with 30 lives instead of the standard 3.
