The Chicago Tribune is doing away with 10 newsroom positions as part of a cost-saving measure, Robert Channick writes for the paper. The report, which cites anonymous sources, says that roughly 24 employees at the paper will lose their jobs as a result of the reduction.
The Tribune’s story does not indicate which positions will be targeted with layoffs but cites a statement from an anonymous spokesperson who says the paper is “working to improve efficiency and productivity across departments.”
Channick puts the layoffs in the context of sweeping changes that have affected the Tribune’s ownership in recent months. Tribune Publishing, a print spinoff company that was formerly a division of the Tribune Company, recently acquired the San Diego Union-Tribune and a series of newspapers in the greater Chicago area:
While there have been some staffing realignments within the Chicago Tribune, the layoffs this week are unrelated to that acquisition, sources said.
There are no layoffs planned at other Tribune Publishing newspapers, sources said.
