Gawker Media has filed a complaint against the U.S. Department of State seeking email correspondence between journalists and a former State Department official. John Cook, executive editor for investigations at Gawker Media, is listed as one of the plaintiffs and explained the lawsuit in a post on Politburo, one of Gawker Media’s sub-blogs.
Specifically, the complaint requests “agency records memorializing e-mail communications between former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Philippe Reines and representatives of the news media.” In 2012, Gawker Media filed a request for correspondence from Reines, who worked for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. As of yet, Gawker Media has not received them, Cook writes.
This is the second high-profile public records request related to Hillary Clinton’s private email server filed by news organizations in recent days. Earlier this week, The Associated Press filed a complaint seeking emails “and government documents” related to Clinton’s tenure at the state department.
