NOLA.com

Twenty-nine full-time newsroom positions are being cut at NOLA Media Group, which operates the New Orleans Times-Picayune and NOLA.com, the company announced Thursday.

The cuts are part of an ongoing consolidation strategy implemented by the Advance-owned company and come just days after the Times Picayune announced that its longtime editor, Jim Amoss, was stepping down. In an announcement, NOLA Media Group said the company would restructure its newsroom into teams focusing on politics, criminal justice, city and suburb issues, sports, life and culture and photojournalism.

Mark Lorando, who recently succeeded Amoss as editor, said in a statement NOLA.com was still “deeply rooted” in New Orleans and committed to covering the community.

Our thoughts today are with our friends and colleagues whose lives have been impacted by the challenging economics of our industry

In addition to the reductions made to the full-time staff, the company is also cutting 9 part-time positions, shrinking the overall size of the newsroom by 20 percent.

NOLA Media Group and the Times-Picayune recently marked the 10-year anniversary of its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, which earned the paper two Pulitzer Prizes.

Correction: A previous version of this story said that Amoss had “departed” NOLA Media Group. Although NOLA Media Group announced Amoss was stepping down as editor earlier this month, he remains on NOLA.com’s editorial board.
