At Poynter, the winter months bring two things: a break from summer rains and a national search for our next Google News Lab Fellow.

In each of the last three years, Poynter has selected one U.S. college student to help us fulfill our mission of informing and instructing journalists around the world. Successful applicants generally have professional experience at multiple news outlets, a solid grasp of digital journalism and a demonstrated interest in covering the media.

In the past, Poynter’s Google fellows have tackled some combination of the following duties: writing and editing news articles for our website, developing our audience, teaching with our faculty, creating instructive media and imparting digital wisdom to our staff. If you think you’d be good at those things, apply here.

As a former Google fellow at Poynter, I can certify that this is an amazing way to spend your summer. While you’re here, you’ll bang out stories a few feet away from Poynter’s writing guru, Roy Peter Clark. You’ll talk over controversial issues with our media ethicist and vice president, Kelly McBride. You’ll be assigned a mentor who will ensure you make the most of your time in Florida. And you’ll do this in the company of the best journalists in the world, who visit Poynter to teach or hone their skills.

The fellowship runs for 10 weeks between June and August at our headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida. Google provides the fellow with an $8,500 stipend and a $1,000 budget for travel. The fellowship is open to any student 18 years or older who will be attending a U.S. college as of Jan. 1 2016. The deadline is Dec. 15, so don’t wait!

If you have any questions about the fellowship, feel free to email me at bmullin@poynter.org.
