The New York Times announced Monday the creation of a two-year media reporting fellowship honoring David Carr, the former “Media Equation” columnist who died earlier this year of complications from lung cancer.
The fellowship will be awarded to a relatively new journalist who will “spend two years in The Times newsroom covering the intersection of technology, media and culture,” The New York Times’ Ravi Somaiya reports.
Priority will be given to journalists like Carr who are open to telling stories in new ways and have had interesting career trajectories, Somaiya reports.
The Times fellowship is the latest in a series of posthumous tributes made to Carr. The Montclair Film Festival created an award honoring him, The New York Times Magazine dedicated its relaunch issue to him and a media reporting awards organization granted him an award recognizing the impact of his career on the media industry.
The fellowship is also a way for the Times to continue Carr’s legacy of mentoring young journalists. Carr took many now-prominent reporters under his wing, including CNN’s Brian Stelter, The New York Times’ Sydney Ember and The Atlantic’s Ta Nehisi Coates.
