Marcus Mabry, a mobile editor at The New York Times, is leaving the newspaper to oversee Twitter’s Moments feature.
Mabry’s departure was announced in an email this morning by New York Times Assistant Masthead Editor Clifford Levy.
“We will miss Marcus’s news judgment and camaraderie – not to mention his boisterous sense of humor,” Levy wrote.
Twitter launched Moments, its human-curated briefing of what’s news, earlier this month. The feed, which is heavy on video and images, is curated by a team of about a dozen curators split between Twitter’s New York and San Francisco offices.
In Mabry, Twitter has found a journalist familiar with curating news from a variety of sources. He was responsible for Watching, The New York Times’ homepage digest of breaking news and helped lead the Times’ rewrite effort on the news desk.
This isn’t the first time a tech company has recruited from The New York Times to lead a newsy effort. Joseph Burgess, an editor at Apple News, was previously morning editor at NYT Now.
In Levy’s email, Mabry reflected fondly on his stint at The New York Times.
“It has been an honor to serve — both the reporters and the readers of the New York Times,” Mabry wrote. “There are none better!”
