USA TODAY

A special edition of USA TODAY that celebrated “Back to the Future Day” moved faster than a DeLorean going 88 mph.

Thursday’s issue, which was wrapped in a replica of a fake USA TODAY that appeared in “Back to the Future Part II,” sold out early yesterday in many places across the U.S., according to a spokesperson for the newspaper. The edition is already being sold on eBay as a collectible, with recent auctions listing the newspaper for between $10 and $15.

So far, more than 17,000 copies have been sold through USA TODAY’s online store, according to a spokesperson.

USA TODAY was one of several brands that used “Back to the Future Day” — the day characters from the 1989 film “Back to the Future II” visited to thwart futuristic disaster — as a marketing opportunity. Pepsi, Nike and USA TODAY each offered special promotions that tied their brands back to the movie.

In addition to printing a special edition of its newspaper, USA TODAY tweaked its logo slightly to make it resemble the version from the movie. The print edition included headlines such as “Cholesterol may be cancer cure” and “Mothers against drunk flying hires new lobbyist.”
