Management at VICE will voluntarily recognize the Writers Guild of America, East as the collective bargaining agent for the company’s editorial employees.

The workers had signed up with the union last week, prompting kind words for the employees from VICE Media CEO Shane Smith but ambiguity about management’s stance.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the company will voluntarily recognize the union and presumably trigger future talks over an initial contract.

Gawker Media, Salon and The Guardian have previously cast their lots with one of two unions, but no actual collective bargaining has yet ensued.

The VICE unit consists of about 80 editorial workers.
