WAMU announced the successor for the popular “The Diane Rehm Show” on Wednesday. Starting with the new year, “1A,” hosted by Joshua Johnson, “will take a deep and unflinching look at America, bringing context and insight to stories unfolding across the country and the world.”

Johnson, host of “Truth Be Told,” previously worked at KQED in San Francisco and helped launch a partnership between Miami’s WLRN and the Miami Herald. Rehm, 80, has hosted the show since 1979.

Johnson is the voice the country needs right now, Rehm said in the announcement.

“At this moment, our country needs a fresh voice that addresses the wonderful diversity of our nation. Joshua Johnson represents America’s future and is the right host at the right time.”
