The New York Times has named Marc Lacey national editor, the paper announced Friday afternoon.
Lacey, a former correspondent in Nairobi, Mexico City and Phoenix, was most recently associate managing editor for weekends at the newspaper and acquitted himself well in that role, according to a staff memo from Executive Editor Dean Baquet.
As deputy foreign editor and then weekend editor, Marc brilliantly presided over cascades of breaking news and brought his rigorous editing to some of our most ambitious enterprise. Ever calm, collegial and open-minded, he won the affection and loyalty of all who worked with him — especially, but not limited to, bagel fans.
Lacey replaces Alison Mitchell, who was recently named senior editor for news at The New York Times, according to Politico. Mitchell, who became national editor in 2013, will “oversee breaking news and daily enterprise for web and print across all desks” as the paper undergoes a digitally-focused reorientation.
Previously, Lacey was a Washington correspondent for The New York Times and also covered Congress for the Los Angeles Times, according to Baquet’s announcement.
