Add media to the list of subjects that Axios will cover.

The new startup from Politico founder Jim VandeHei announced Tuesday that it’s bringing aboard Sara Fischer to be its media trends writer.

Fischer, a digital producer at The Washington Post and a former breaking news writer for CNN Politics, isn’t taking on an ordinary media beat, VandeHei told Poynter.

“Few things are changing with more velocity and consequence than how people consume and disseminate news and information,” VandeHei told Poynter in an email. “This is not a conventional media beat: Her job will be to help everyone from political and business leaders to serious news consumers around the country better anticipate and understand these changes.”

Following Axios’ stated goal to explain the collision of various industries, including business, technology and politics, Fischer will also help spell out how the media fits in with and influences other sectors.

Fischer previously worked on the business side at The New York Times and Politico, which means she has firsthand experience with both editorial and commercial functions of the media.
