Loyola Academy this week is struggling to deal with the fallout of sex abuse allegations after a former student filed a lawsuit claiming a Jesuit priest sexually abused him at the school in the late 1960s.
The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court Aug. 21, alleges that the Rev. Donald McGuire repeatedly molested and beat a boy at the high school in 1968 and 1969.
The suit also accuses McGuire’s religious order, the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus, of failing to inform law enforcement officials after learning of the abuse in 1969.
The alleged victim is now a 49-year-old man living in Arizona and is named in the lawsuit only as “John Doe 84.” He lived in Chicago and attended the school as a freshman and sophomore at the time the abuse took place, said his attorney, Marc Pearlman. McGuire was a teacher and counselor at the school.
