Re. Some Important WSJ Legal Victories Under Stuart Karle's Watch:
I wrote about Stuart Karle's success as the Wall Street Journal's newsroom lawyer in the late 1990's and last year had him speak to my journalism students at CUNY. Two important victories that are well worth highlighting:
Jameel v. Wall Street Journal Europe, on Stuart Karle's watch as general counsel, resulted in a landmark victory for journalists and media companies sued under English libel law. The case provides important protections for the press and has multinational implications. See: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200506/ldjudgmt/jd061011/jamee-1.htm http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/12/world/europe/12britain.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6046152.stm
In the MMAR libel case in Texas, a $222.7 million verdict against against the Wall Street Journal -- which was the largest libel verdict in recorded history --was trimmed by $200 million and ultimately thrown out. See: http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=1999_3185139
