wait for the check?
Posted by Nan Connolly 11/17/2008 6:15:44 AM

I advise my students at UCF to expect credit checks in the hiring process. I find they are often run on prospective newsroom employees. Once they have your social security number, it is a fair bet they will run a check/
Another hot button is driving records; I have compiled a list of advertised positions that require a current driving record before hire. I show this to students as inspiration to drive carefully.
These reports can be pulled from your state transportation department and cost $20 or so. I think everyone should have theirs in hand before interviewing. Those who will hit the road for a story, in their vehicle or the company's, can expect scrutiny of their driving records, which in many states extends back to your teen adventures.
There is no 'perfect' person but in this competitive era there is nothing wrong with looking your best.
Credit score gremlins include bills paid late by just a few days; medical office and labs are especially quick to report bad or late debt. It is worth the time to verify that bills are paid, especially those paid by a medical insurer but reported on your account. Checking the free online credit reports annually is a key step in tracking problems.
As is avoiding points on your license, etc.
