Massacre is the wrong word
Posted by Jennifer Canfield 11/3/2009 4:25:32 PM

I must strongly disagree with use of the word "massacre."

I think we're all aware of what the dictionary says, but the dictionary doesn't always account for how the public uses the word and will interpret it. I hear the word massacre and think Charles Manson, Wounded Knee, etc.

Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify of highlight incidents out of context.

The number of animals killed has little to do with the problem here. It was what they did or didn't do after the kill. If you have to use the word then understand that it takes a whole lot of "massacre" to feed a village. And perhaps when Thanksgiving comes around I will be seeing this headline, "Annual Turkey Massacre Honors Early Immigrants."

You used the word slaughter on Twitter to promote the entry, but massacre in the title of the entry. I don't believe the two are interchangeable. Quote the dictionary all day long, but it doesn't make it right. Though, this is just my point of view.

A local explains the culture of hunting
Posted by Al Tompkins 11/3/2009 8:59:41 AM

This article is a real look into the culture of caribou hunting in Alaska. Make sure you push all the way to the last page, where he talks about the growth of wasteful killing in the North and the cultural divide that is causing.
This piece also provides some photos that gives you an idea of the size of the herds we are talking about.
