No problems
Posted by Kurt Moore 11/5/2009 11:20:21 AM

There has not been any large school-based clinics locally yet because there has not yet been an adequate supply of vaccine.

But we covered a clinic held at a high school for people considered most at-risk and did not encounter any problems.

We have worked with the health department closely, including when they sent out letters to parents about school-based clinics then had to switch gears when they received less vaccine than they expected.

At the clinic I covered our photographer was able to take photos and the staff let me talk to people as they walked out after receiving their shots.

Everything seemed to run smoothly. To be honest, I think they had an idea they were pretty organized and wanted our help in letting the public see that.

As far as the school-based clinics, I expect we will find that out soon. I'm not sure which superintendents if any will give us a fight on it. We have a good working relationship with them but we've never had to argue HIPAA with any. Those arguments are more likely to happen when dealing with local fire departments and the hospital.

HIPAA

Not necessarily because of H1N1, but I can never convince the hospital to let me do any kind of interviewing or reporting in or around the hospital. They're concerned because of HIPAA and I don't know how to convince them otherwise.

HIPAA used against journalists
Posted by Christy Perry 11/3/2009 8:20:30 PM

Al,
HIPAA was used as an excuse for banning my TV news reporting students from Syracuse University's health services center -- though later, the center's director admitted that HIPAA regs don't prohibit reporters from shooting video in their clinic.

HHS outlines who and what are protected (or not) by HIPAA on its website: http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/consumers/index.html
