@Dave and @Nan

Dave, Thanks and sorry we didn't talk at the conf. Mel's phrase was that "letting ad networks on the home page and section fronts" is a "dumb practice." Which I shortened to not letting ad networks on "choice pages." I won't argue with your logic: If you're a high-value site that can attract high-CPM ads through a top network, that's great. I'd be grateful, though, if you could give me real examples of any local news site that's consistently getting a real $50-$100 CPM with any consistency in a network-served ad spot.

Nan: The venture capitalist I saw was Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures, who can be reached pretty easily through Twitter, his firm's site and other means. Jeff Jarvis, the host of the event, said there were "a few" (I believe he later said four) at the event. I see Phineas Barnes and Charlie O"Donnell (@ceonyc on Twitter) from First Round Capital on the list. Amra Tareen of AllVoices used to be a venture capitalist and is now an entrepreneuse.

Ad Networks, VCs and more

I think the author misunderstood Mel's comment re ad networks. There is more than one flavor. There's the low value ad networks like Google AdSense and myriad others that are a big waste of time for a local site. If you are lucky/successful, you might make $50-100 a month. They only make sense if you have millions/billions of unsold ad impressions. Let's call those ad networks the "Garbage Ad Networks" (GANs) as they add trashy ads to your site and are worth about as much as your garbage in dollar terms. Those are quite different than the local ad networks (LANs) that Adify et al enable that have local/niche focus and higher CPMs that are sold by humans.

To Nan's comment, the only "VC" or "foundation" I'd count on is your local advertiser. I know VCs well and even though we're a profitable six figure website, we're light years from being a "VC deal". Foundations are nice but won't be available or applicable for 99% of local sites. For either, one needs a very, very, very unique thing to appeal to them.

thanks Dorian for your typical trenchant reporting and astute take on the state of the sites. Would love to see a list of the VCs and foundation suits who saw fit to visit the boot camp for site authors. I have a niche site concept I think they'd consider and I even speak spreadsheet.
Skype me? I am ready to roll and open to ideas. So who are these people?
