Preston
Posted by Lulu Fishbein 12/1/2009 8:45:33 PM

The comment above from Preston Turegano is not surprising coming from him but is extreme in its vitriol, even for him. While Karin Winner might not have been a model editor on all fronts, the UT won two Pulitzers under her leadership. Perhaps Preston did not value her work because he was so busy mailing it in during his last several years as he covered the critical, intense world of -- wait for it -- television! And he only did that half the time while he spent the other part of his 7.5-hour day gossiping around the newsroom like the bitter, old queen that he is.

Perhaps he should have offered to be Ms. Winner's stylist and makeup artist since her looks clearly bothered him so much. Then again, she's smarter than that.

Abdication

Union-Tribune president and publisher Ed Moss says editor Karin Winner was “highly respected, not only in our newsroom but also in the journalism industry.” Barf! I left the UT three years ago after 36 years. I was not alone in my contempt for her incompetence, treachery, prudish mentality, elitism, blatant partiality to certain individuals, sycophancy when she was around former UT publisher David Copley, and her pathetic efforts to try to soften her butch demeanor and looks with terrible makeup and tragic outfits. Dec. 31 will be a day of liberation at the UT.

She started at WWD

The U-T's announcement of Winner's retirement is inaccurate on one count. She didn't begin her career at the San Diego Union. She arrived there after a stint at Women's Wear Daily.
