our paper, the Texas City (TX) Sun, is affectionately called the "Texas Shitty Sun" by a few around town. Our sister/rival paper is the Galveston Daily News, which we like to call the Daily Snooze... then of course there is the Bryan Weasle (Eagle)... the nicknames make it all a lot more fun :)

Here on the Central Coast of California I now for the Monterey County Hurled (Herald), which is in fierce competition with the Salinas Californication (Californian). On the other side of the Monterey Bay, the daily snoozepaper is called the Santa Cruz Senile. The dominant weeklies in the region are the Coast Meekly and the Carmel Corn Pone (Pine Cone), which is also known as the Carmel Porn Cone.

My colleagues tell me that years ago our paper was the West Central Daily Tribune, and it was called the Daily Disappointment.
Do you think that's why they changed the name to simply West Central Tribune? As far as we know there aren't any current nicknames, though some people still use the old one.
I have also worked for the Waseca Daily Urinal (Journal), the Las Cruces Snooze (Sun-News), and the Rapid City Urinal.

I've never heard it said, but with all the scatological references I now assume our readers call us the Pioneer Piss. Or maybe the Pus?
A coworker reminds me that our former governor, the onetime wrestler and now an up-and-coming MSNBC talk show host, called us the Pioneer Porn because we carried ads for strip bars in our sports pages.
Conservatives in town refer to our competition across the river (the Star Tribune, a/k/a STrib) as the Red Star, but I wish Stribunski would occur to them.
And of course, we've had the weekly Shitty Pages for years.
Employees of our local NBC affiliate are known as the KARE bears because of the station call letters.

Having the surname, "Tingle", I endured name calling from young age.
Mind you, this didn't always work out so bad for the fairer sex!
Today, I am the director and broadcaster of Media Man Australia, and guess what...a few folks named me "Media Boy", in the first few months of operation.
Today, 18 months into the business, the names have ceased, and TV outlets sometimes refer me to Greg "Media Man" Tingle, and I have started a book entitled, "From Newport Boy to Media Man!"
Names are powerful. The trick is using them to your advantage.

Here in Portland, the Portland Oregonians is often referred to as the Boregonian or the Big O.
Perhaps uniquely, you can also buy bumper stickers displaying your distate for the Boregonian, playing on their own slogan, If it matters to Oregonians, it's in the Oregonian." This is a reflection of public disdain for their role in covering up the Packwood scandal until AFTER the election.
"If it matters to Oregonians, it's in the Washington Post."

I worked at the Benton County (Ark.) Daily Record which has been referred to by the moniker "Daily Retard."
My wife might not have been original when she referred to the AP as the PP, but I haven't really heard of any nicknames for it. But it makes up for it with its red-light internal jargon--it's a shame the late night broadcast trick isn't nearly as fun as it sounds.
Finally, my personal favorite perjoritive isn't a newspaper's; a nurse practioner I know works for Baptist Medical Center. Her husband calls it the Big BM.

So far, I've worked at the Ithaca Urinal, the Rochester Demigogue and Comical and the Richmond Times-Disgrace. I find it amusing more than degrading that readers make up nicknames for their newspapers. After all, they wouldn't bother if they didn't care.

I worked for many years at the Middlesex News (now MetroWest Daily News) in Framingham, MA. It was ripe for nicknames, such as Littlesex or Muddlesex, or Middlesux. "The News" because "The Snooze."
To our west was the Worcester Telegram, known as "The Snooze" for its torpid prose.
To the south was the Milford Daily News, where reporters rewrote everything from its competitors, without attribution. Once, they cut one of my stories out, and pasted it on to one of their pages; the font was just different enough that you could tell.
Its nickname: "The Pilferred Daily News."

My British newspaper friends invariably refer to the Guardian (nee The Manchester Guardian) as the Groaniad, in part because it's so laden with typos. It's a pro-Labor paper, vs the Daily Torygraph (Telegraph), a Conservative one.
