The Register got it right. No doubt - a page for the moment and a page for history. It stands up on many levels. Mostly for doing what a front page the day after should do after a big event - crystalize the moment.
Obviously that was easier said than done, esp. when you illustrate how many others edited their fronts - or rather - abandoned the critical editing choices that could have made their pages stronger.
A few that didn't get it

Des Moines Register: Looks like a web-page, not a newspaper. Huckabee looks better? Considering the intentionally poor photo choices of Republicans in general by newspapers, it's not surprising that the Republican candidates look poorly. However this photo makes him look like he is dodging an assassin's bullet, that or dodging the media. Seems clear that is the inference that we are supposed to draw. Obama on the other hand is photographed looking like a Messiah, and listening to the hallelujah chorus. He is photographed from below, Huckabee is photographed from above. Hmm. The design of the page is nice, the message is also clear. Obama good, Huckabee a doof.
WaPo: "fairly equal". what! Not even close to equal. Still have not figured out why the names appear in one order and the photos appear in the opposite order. It also appears that the Huckabee photo is either poorly shot or has been photoshoped. Not the large area of shadow starting about mid photo. Obama's is bright and clean. No bad tangents on the Obama photo, several in the Huckabee photo. Huckabee photo is on the fold, so would be cut in half.
Hartford Courant: you're kidding right? You actually belief that was not intentional?
NYP: excellent tabloid cover.
Ark Dem: the only people who were surprised by Huckabee's showing are those in the echo-chamber of newsrooms. Nothing wrong with this page. He is their Gov, why wouldn't he get a prominent placement?
Gazette: another intentionally bad photo of Huckabee, and a fawning pic of Obama. I actually like this front page. It doesn't look as good on the web, but in hand it's a good cover.
Other comments: WaPo and ChiSun wasted front page space with pics of "journalists" and commentators. Self-absorption at it's finest.
One of the biggest issues with design experts, they only know design. Page real estate is costly on paper. Conveying info is the key, not looking cool.
