New reality
Posted by Rob Bignell 11/3/2007 4:54:40 PM

The new reality among young employees is that they want constant feedback and concerted efforts to help them grow professionally. Ron Zemke, Claire Raines and Bob Filipcza have written about this extensively. Managers and editors no longer can say to employees, "What can you do for us?" and stop there; instead they must refocus their approach and say, "Here's what we can do for you." The result of the latter approach can be a better trained staff with high morale - in short, a staff that gives even more of itself because it sees a big payoff. That means a better newspaper.

The old 1950s style of management only will lead to low morale, poor retention rates, high employee burnout and ultimately a bad (or at best mediocre)newspaper. As baby boomers retire and a labor shortage prevails, an old-style management approach will be disastrous for any newsroom.

Can I come work for you?

What a great slideshow and wonderful comments! I am so tired of hearing, "If we do it for you we'll have to do it for everybody," or worse "We have to treat everybody the same."

We don't all get the same raises, the same motivation, the same pay...why should we be expected to be treated like robots out of the box. I am motivated by challenge, adventure, puzzles and the impossible. I look more for fun than money.

I want feedback, respect, acknowledgment and knowing that if I go above and beyond I'll be rewarded - with more training, more interaction etc.

We are NOT all the same. I hope leaders and managers out there are listening...
