Calendar User Guide

What's the calendar for?

Use the calendar to find training or other events, to schedule your own personal events, to avoid scheduling conflicts, and to set up e-mail reminders for upcoming events.

If you'd like to add your journalism organization's events to the calendar, please let us know and we'll get you set up.

To find training or other events

On the main calendar page, in the box marked 'Words to Search For', describe the kind of training or event you're looking for.

To get the most results, select 'Any of the Words' from the next drop-down menu. If you limit your search by date, be sure to follow this format: mm/dd/yyyy. Example: 01/01/2003.

To view all events for a particular organization (referred to as 'Host' in the calendar), leave the 'Words to Search For' box blank, and check the box next to the organization in the list below.

To browse events in a traditional calendar format, click 'Open Calendar'. Use the arrows in the top corners of the calendar to move from month to month. Move your mouse over any of the colored bars on the calendar and you'll display the name of the event in the light blue box just beneath the calendar. Click on the colored bar to get more details about the event.

To set what's displayed on your calendar

At the top of the main calendar page, click on 'Calendar Settings.' On this page, 'My Calendar' includes all the events you add yourself; the other options are for the events of various journalism organizations. Check any that you'd like included in your customized calendar view, and click 'Update' at the bottom of the page. You can always change these choices later.

To schedule your own events

At the top of the main calendar page, click on 'Add New Item'. Fill in any fields that apply. If you're entering a multi-day event, be sure to enter every day of the event -- not just the beginning and ending dates.

When you're finished, click 'Create' at the bottom of the page.

To avoid scheduling conflicts

At the top of the main calendar page, click 'Open Calendar'. Events that you've decided to display -- which may or may not include events you've entered yourself -- are shown as colored bars. You can move from month to month with the arrows in the top corners of the calendar. You can use this view to check for scheduling conflicts and overlaps.

To set up reminders

You can schedule a personal reminder about any event listed in the Calendar. Simply click on 'Schedule a reminder for this item' and enter the date when you would like to receive the contents of that event page by e-mail.

Example: Suppose you'd like to be reminded of the IRE workshop at Penn State on Oct. 25, 2003. Click on the Reminder link at the top of the page, enter the date you'd like to receive the info, and you're set. You'll also find a list of your reminders compiled on your Personal Page.
