    Year-in-Photos Packages Make Good Browsing

One of my favorite things about the end of the year wrap-ups is always the photo packages, and today there were plenty to see.

The national standout this year for me is The New York Times, with its stunning display of photographs from the year, organized by topic, and viewable in full screen. It’s a great way to present some terrific photography.

Other national package worth a look include MSNBC, in what has become a standard, but effective, presentation, and the Christian Science Monitor‘s year in review package, which does a lovely job of bundling up its major multimedia projects from the year. There’s also the best of The Washington Post.

Locally, I like how the Orlando Sentinel is displaying links to the year-in-review photo galleries in a strip across the front, and the Austin American-Statesman created a lovely navigation to show off individual photographer’s work from the year.

If you’re interested in multimedia highlights from around the country this year, take a look at some of my personal favorites.

Gaza Violence Leads Today’s Web Sites

The violence in Gaza leads almost all the national Web sites today, with some attention to the missing snowmobilers in British Columbia. The presentation of the Gaza story is very similar across many sites, so I’d like to take a slight detour and talk about CNN’s tabbed story display. I think it makes a lot of sense, particularly on a story like this one, with a lot of history and a lot of opinion generated.  It also avoids a long list of links hanging off the side of the article.

Multimedia Livens Up the Day After Christmas

Looks like it’s a quiet day after Christmas online, but a couple multimedia pieces livened things up. HamptonRoads.com (The Virginian Pilot) has a fun look at retiring U.S. Sen. John Warner’s Capitol Hill office, using rollovers with audio that give more information on items hanging on the wall.

WVGazette.com (The Charleston Gazette) used the free Vuvox tool to build an extensive multimedia year in review package.

Nationally, the CBC took a little different spin on the best photos by creating a year-end video from user-submitted photos and video.

Economic Woes Blight Holiday Cheer Online

Unless you’re a Bears fan, it’s a tough day to be reading the news around the country. Economic woes seem to be a dominant theme among local sites this morning, the impact on the auto industry and dealers in Detroit and Hartford, and the poinsettia business in L.A. STL Today has an interesting take: people cutting back on their medicine to save money. New Orleans actually has the only good news — the city is growing in spite of the recession.

Nationally, the news was similar, with a sprinkling of discussion of the Obama White House preparations and stimulus plans. In the Wall Street Journal, the increase in churches declaring bankruptcy is a good — if depressing — pre-Christmas Eve read, and The Huffington Post highlights California’s budget wranglings with an official’s threat of state bankruptcy. USA Today has a broad take on the story — if we can all just hang on through most of the next year, things should improve by 2010.

What can I say? Happy holidays, folks.

    Weather, Sports Lead Monday’s Homepages

Weather dominated the national broadcast-related sites, along with the Drudge Report. The CBC is reporting that Canada’s been particularly hard hit.

Politico’s “Top ten media blunders of 2008″ was an eye-catching post this morning, and should make for some good around-the-office discussion.

Locally, weather — and the impact on holiday travel — vied for the top spots on the front with football. The Baltimore Sun is running “In Their Debt,” an interesting three-part multimedia project on problems with hospital debt collection in the state, particularly against the poor.

Msnbc.com Features Slideshow of 2008 Newsmakers

Wednesday’s front pages featured news about Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s announcement that British troops will leave Iraq by mid-next year, as well as news about Obama being named the “person of the year” in Time Magazine. Among the local home pages, the Portland (Maine) Press Herald ran an insightful piece about Iraqi war refugees fleeing to Portland.

Msnbc.com published an interesting photo slideshow on its homepage titled “Newsmaker Farewells in 2008.” The slideshow features photos of well-known individuals who have died this year, along with brief descriptions of who they are and why they made headlines. Bobby Fischer, Margaret Truman Daniel and William F. Buckley are among some of the newsmakers. The site also published another slideshow, “Final Curtain Calls 2008,” which highlights actors who have died in the past year — Heath Ledger, Estelle Getty, Bernie Mac and more.

Slideshows of this nature are something that a lot of news organizations could put together, perhaps with a more local angle, as part of a year-in-review feature.

The Honolulu Advertiser Runs Seven-Part Series about Domestic Abuse in Hawaii

Headlines asking “Should Blago Stay or Should He Go?” and “In Blagojevich Case, Is it a Crime, or Just Talk?” topped stories on Tuesday morning’s home pages. Impeachment proceedings for Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, who on Tuesday morning was being referred to as “Blago” on sites such as Yahoo! News and Fox News, are now underway.

The majority of local news sites Tuesday morning featured stories about the weather and tight budgets around the holidays. Among the perennial winter stories, though, was a hidden gem.

On its home page, The Honolulu Advertiser ran a photo of a young Korean immigrant holding her head to show the damage her ex-boyfriend caused when stepping on it in an act of abuse. The related story is one of a seven-part series that breaks down domestic abuse in Hawaii’s homes through written, audio and visual storytelling.

One of the stories in the series talks about battered women who leave their houses to escape violence and end up on the beach, a place that some consider a refuge.

The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, Msnbc.com, National Public Radio, Huffington Post, Politico, Slate, Yahoo! News, Drudge Report, BBC, CBC, The Guardian, International Herald Tribune
