Wednesday's front pages featured news about
Prime Minister Gordon Brown's announcement that
British troops will leave Iraq by mid-next year, as well as news about
Obama being named the "person of the year" in Time Magazine. Among the local home pages, the
Portland (Maine) Press Herald ran an insightful piece about
Iraqi war refugees fleeing to Portland.
Msnbc.com published an interesting photo slideshow on its homepage titled
"Newsmaker Farewells in 2008." The slideshow features photos of well-known individuals who have died this year, along with brief descriptions of who they are and why they made headlines. Bobby Fischer, Margaret Truman Daniel and William F. Buckley are among some of the newsmakers. The site also published another slideshow, "Final Curtain Calls 2008," which highlights actors who have died in the past year -- Heath Ledger, Estelle Getty, Bernie Mac and more.
Slideshows of this nature are something that a lot of news organizations could put together, perhaps with a more local angle, as part of a year-in-review feature.
