WBNS-TV investigative reporter
Paul Aker, my old friend, started nosing around tow truck lots in Columbus, Ohio, and found a juicy little story about
towing companies charging about 30 percent more than the law intended.
Companies are tacking on administrative fees and towing charges that local governments didn't anticipate, and car owners have little choice but to pay the inflated fines.
This is a good everyman kind of topic. The tow truck companies' charges won't result in billions of dollars being lost, but they represent the kind of rip-off that hits the people who can't afford it. Sure, they should obey parking laws, but towing companies should obey laws, too.
