The L.A. Times offers wildfire updates via this Google Map. Click image to explore.
Here's a great example of using a Google Map to cover breaking news: The Los Angeles Times has published a wildfire map. Green flame icons represent contained fires; red icons are still burning. Click on any icon for a list-format overview and latest updates.

One suggestion: It would be great if they would also link from the "bubble" detail info on the map to current coverage (stories, photos, video, audio, etc.). That would probably drive traffic. You can embed links in Google Maps.

Here's how to create a Google Map.

(Thanks to Online Journalism Review for the tip.)
