Amazon Opens up Kindle Source Code, Considers New Delivery Formats
Posted by Will Sullivan at 4:31 PM on Jun. 18, 2009
Amazon may soon add functionality that would allow users to read more document forms beyond the Kindle e-book format.

Saul Hansell of The New York Times reported that Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO, dropped hints about these changes at the Wired Disruptive by Design conference this week:

"In the future, Amazon.com's Kindle e-book reader will display more book formats beyond its own. And you should also expect to see Kindle books on a lot more devices.

"... The latest Kindle model has better support for Adobe's PDF file format, and he said that in the future, Kindle readers would support other formats as well. (He didn't say anything about Adobe's protected format, which competes more directly with the Kindle format.)"

Additionally, Amazon now has opened the free source code for all three generations of the device, including the Kindle DX, which will hit streets next week.

Amazon's move is an opportunity for newspapers, magazines, books and other traditional publications to embrace new digital open-source platforms for content delivery.

E-readers in their current form are just the beginning. With an open platform, there's greater potential for a hybrid experience that merges the linear, easily-readable experience of print newspaper publications with the interactive, timely and information-rich opportunities the Web presents.
