Google News Does OK
Posted by Steve Outing at 12:24 PM on Nov. 5, 2003
NewsKnife is wrapping up its "Google News Watch" for the year, and spokesperson Neil Pharazyn reports that the automated news service from Google isn't quite up to the standards set by news services that use human editors -- but it's not bad. Google News chose the top two stories correctly 63 percent of the time, while Yahoo! News and CNN.com got it right about 77 percent of the time. NewsKnife monitors major American and UK news websites and tracks what human editors select as the top news stories of the day. Google News Watch was created a year ago to see how well Google News matched up with non-automated news selection.

Pharazyn wrote to me: "I see that a year ago in Editor & Publisher you headlined that 'Google News Could Change Online News Industry.' I'd have to say that on our evidence this is not the case so far."
