Competition Heating Up in Micro-local Citizen Journalism Space
Posted by Steve Outing at 7:10 AM on Dec. 3, 2004
Earlier this week I mentioned the citizen-journalism start-up Pegasus News, which is currently operating in stealth mode pending its official debut. Well, it seems that all the talk about what's also called "open-source journalism" has gotten a few entrepreneurs in action mode.

Online-news pioneer Mark Potts tells me about a venture he's involved in called Backfence.com, which is also in stealth mode currently. He explains: "Our vision is to create sites that offer extremely local coverage, written almost entirely by the readers, using blogs, wikis, and other formats to allow people to share community news and information with their neighbors in a friendly, ad-supported environment distributed via the Web, RSS, and other online media."

Backfence is on track to launch its first site in the Washington, D.C., area in the first quarter of 2005. As Potts says of the micro-local citizen journalism space, "The game is afoot!"
