'Citizen Journalism,' 'Personal Media,' or ...?
Posted by Steve Outing at 2:10 PM on Jun. 13, 2005
I'm just asking. ... Do you think the terms "citizen journalism" or "citizen media" are the ones we should be using?

I've been writing lots about the concepts of citizen journalism, and about the activities of pioneers in the field. But I can't say that I'm enamored yet with the term we seem to have settled on, even though I've used it often in my own writing.

J.D. Lasica has sometimes used the term "personal media" for describing citizen-journalism efforts, blogging, podcasting, and other forms of amateur journalism. I like that term a little better than citizen journalism/media -- though perhaps it's not as descriptive.

What do you think? The slice of the journalism world that revolves around "everybody can be a journalist" is still very young. There's still time to come up with a better descriptor. Or is citizen journalism good enough?
