TV Downloads: The Future Is Now

The transformation of the Web from text-centric to multimedia-driven is under way. PBS is producing its first Internet-only, downloadable TV series: "NerdTV."

As with other forms of Internet-delivered content, the most appealing target audience at the outset is the techie crowd. But over time, the audience for on-demand content delivered through the Internet will be a mainstream audience. And the old distribution channels will become ever less relevant.

Now we can see why the cable industry has invested billions in creating Internet access services -- but it may not be enough to enable the companies to avoid "Internet bypass."
