AT&T technician Mark Klein gave the Los Angeles Times over 100 pages of technical documents showing how the National Security Agency was installing "splitters" that would allow it to copy both domestic and international Internet traffic. After working for two months with an LAT reporter, Klein was told the story had been killed. ("We could not figure out what was going on" based on Klein's highly technical documents, says ex-LAT editor Dean Baquet.) Klein then took the papers to the New York Times, which published its story last April.
