While accepting an SPJ award last Friday, Village Voice Media executive editor Michael Lacey referred to an old friend, the late Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Tom Fitzpatrick, as "my n----." Lacey says he's sorry that his "comments about a dead colleague rankled listeners." He adds: "My words, meant to honor a friend, were inappropriate. ...It is regrettable that any phrase of mine offended those attending a First Amendment awards banquet."
