Duke Chronicle
JohnCarroll
Duke Chronicle reporter Julius Jones asked former Los Angeles Times editor John Carroll if he'd ever "struggled with a conflict of interest personally." Carroll's reply: "Mary Jo Kopechne was my sister's roommate, and I ended up covering some of the events [following her death], and I always felt torn because I did know her parents, but I didn't want to take advantage of them, and I ended up wishing I'd never got involved with it. It was just so wrenching to try to be a friend to them and all the time I'm listening [and thinking], 'Maybe I can put some of that in the paper.' It was something I should have never gotten entangled in." || RELATED: Carroll speaks at Duke.
