Philip Anschutz (left), who owns the LA Lakers and LA Kings and other professional sports teams, becomes the fourth owner of the
Examiner, which began publication in 1865. Hearst sold the paper to the
Fang family in 2000. Hearst's $66 million subsidy of the Fang family operations ended last July. In 2003, Anschutz was #33 on the
Forbes 400 list. His Denver-based company has investments in the fields of energy, pipelines, railroads, agriculture, real estate, film production, movie theaters, professional sports, telecommunications, entertainment, as well as radio and newspaper media outlets.
