One study claims that
Craigslist took $50 million to $65 million a year away from Bay Area newspapers alone. Craigslist CEO
Jim Buckmaster denies that and says the website is only interested in providing a valuable service to readers, not taking business away from anyone else. "It's possibly a cynical cop-out by the moneyed interests at newspapers to point fingers at Craigslist," he says. "Newspapers are cutting their investment in reporting. They're running more Associated Press wire stories and increasing the percentage of the product they devote to advertising," alienating readers. "But it's much easier to point the finger at a site like Craigslist."
