A Romenesko reader asks me in an e-mail: "What does [Poynter ethicist]
Bob Steele make of this? Interesting ethical question." The reader highlights this passage from
Kurt Eichenwald's
story on a boy's webcam porn operation: "In a series of meetings, The Times persuaded Justin to abandon his business and, to protect other children at risk, assisted him in contacting the Justice Department. Arrests and indictments of adults he identified as pornography producers and traffickers began in September."

"I think even the most traditional journalism ethics professor would be hard pressed to make a case against [Eichenwald], in light of the larger picture," writes
Brian Montopoli.
