Thursday, the same day that
Boston Globe employees learned
they would take a 5 percent pay reduction as part of a cutback throughout The New York Times Media Group, the
Globe laid off 20 part-timers in the newsroom.
Boston Globe spokesman Bob Powers told Poynter that the cuts, effective Thursday, are part of a
previously announced plan to cull 50 newsroom positions through buyouts and layoffs. He confirmed in an e-mail that "the part-time staff members were not paid severance, in accordance with the terms of the
Globe's contract with the Guild."
The
Boston Herald reported Thursday that
24 Globe employees, concentrated in the newsroom's business and photography departments, had taken the buyout offer.
Powers said he couldn't confirm whether that's accurate. "Today is the last day for any employees to retract their acceptance," he wrote. "We will have a complete picture early next week."
He did say, however, that the 20 part-time jobs eliminated Thursday represent close to 15 full-time equivalent positions.
