A year after the storms first hit land, the Gulf Coast continues to grapple toward recovery from the pain wrought by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. News organizations find themselves doubly taxed by the dual tasks of rebuilding themselves and chronicling the same effort within their communities.

The interactive map linked from the image below reflects the swath of the storm from as far east as Florida and as far west as Texas. (If we've missed some news organizations, please let us know, and we will add them.)

Start by clicking the image below, and then mouse over the red dots at various cities for a clickable list of local news organizations. Below the map, we've included reports on Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath from news organizations across the country. Scroll down for more.

For more Poynter Online coverage of Hurricane Katrina's one-year anniversary, scroll to the bottom of this page. There, you will find five lessons the storm has taught journalists, the story of an editor as he leads his staff to recovery, Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose's reflections on the storm's lasting impacts, Roy Peter Clark's musings on the relationship between Katrina and the social contract and personal essays from journalists who survived the storm and are working toward recovery.
